Hot bike photos inside...

My cycling 'career' began after I finally graduated from college in 2002.  I moved to the NJ shore after changing jobs and purchased a shiny new Cannondale R500 Triple as a graduation gift to myself.

I race my first triathlon on this bike and it served me very well and would still be doing so had I not gotten hit by a BMW 330 convertible on 17 July 2003.  One taco'd wheel, frame bent in three places, shattered glasses, broken helmet, and road rash on my entire left side later, I got my current road bike:

She's a 2003 Cannondale R1000 Double, size 60cm.  Except for spending a year with aerobars on (for tri training/racing) she's pretty much stock.

Notable features:

  • CAAD 7 Optimo frame
  • LOOK A5.1 pedals
  • Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels w/ Vittoria Diamante Pro tires
  • 2004 Ironman Wisconsin bike inspection sticker on underside of stem.
I've logged approx 7-8K incident free miles on this lovely machine and I still ride this bike when I do the hilly stuff, since the low gear is a 39x25, versus a 39x23 on my tri bike.

This past February, with the spoils of 6 months at a new, better paying, job burning a hole in my pocket, I went to Elite Bicycles to see what they had.

After not being able to get a good fit on their entry-level bike, I put a deposit down on their middle tier bike, expecting to pick it up in early/mid April.

They suprised me by upgrading me to the full custom Razor model, at no cost.

So, on 18 April, I picked her up:

The rear view shows how narrow the tubes are.  Almost every tube on this bike is airfoil shaped.

Specs:

  • Easton Aluminum/Scandium Ultralite tubing
  • Full Ultegra 10 TT components
  • FSA headset
  • LOOK CX6 carbon pedals
  • Thomson elite zero seatpost.
  • Profile pursuit bars with Syntace C2 ultralite aerobars.
I just picked up a set of Reynolds Alta Comp Aero wheels to replace the Bontrager Selects that came with the bike.  They ride a lot stiffer and weigh over 300g less.  They're going to get Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX's today or tomorrow.

Next up race wheels.

Custom track bike by miker2 (2.00 / 0) #2 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 03:23:36 PM EST
My coach planted the track racing seed in my head, so I asked Elite about it on Saturday.  It's going to be a custom Razor frame (with slacker seat angle) built up with a track kit and probably Zipp 404 tubulars.

Although, if gas prices don't go down, I'm getting a beater to ride to work.

DAMN! by Awakened Dreamer (4.00 / 1) #3 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 04:10:19 PM EST

Please excuse the drool running from my chin.

I love that Elite frame. The way the rear tire just sort of folds into the downtube is just heavenly. I'll bet that cuts on rear wind-drag too.

I wouldn't exactly turn my nose up at that Canondale either.

Nice bikes.

Seat tube cutouts by miker2 (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 05:38:39 PM EST
They're pretty much a standard on mid to high end triathlon bikes.  Some even have set screws so you can get the tire really close to the tube.

If you have a rim with a big cross section, or a disc wheel, the cutout really helps a lot.  Once I get the Zipp 808's, it'll look and be very aero.

The Cannondale's a good bike, it ascends really well.  I do this ride that averages over 100' vertical per mile, so I ride this bike.  Gets me up the hills and handles well when going 45mph down the other side.

Nice. by Awakened Dreamer (4.00 / 1) #6 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 05:45:56 PM EST

I guess I'm not much on tri-bikes. I'm pretty much road only. Though I do occassionally peruse the mountain bikes for the sake of possible future sanity on riding the rougher roads in the area.

In the end, I probably couldn't own a tri-bike if it looked like that one because of certain parts of the frame that would just drive me absolutely batty when looking at it. But I love, love, LOVE that cut for the rear wheel.

My little beater Giant OCR2 is an awesome climber. Alux Aluminum frame means total stiffness in the rear. No give=good climb. Now, if I could just get my legs to be good at climbing, I might be on to something.

But I haven't stopped on a climb yet since starting back up. Just gotten real, REAL slow.

I dig Cannondales. They're just such nice bikes. Even their low end bikes have a decent feel to them. I tried a couple when I ended up with the Giant, and the only thing that pushed me to the Giant was the sizing issue. All the larger Cannondales I could afford were sold out.

In the end, I was happy with how it turned out. But I still drool when I see IRL or piccies, of a Cannondale.

I just found out by ad hoc (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 05:28:37 PM EST
you can take bikes on the Chinatown bus that goes between Boston's Chinatown and NYC Chinatown (around $15 o.w.)! Apparently, most of the traffic is day trippers with no luggage, so you can stick an assembled bike in the storage bin under the bus.

This opens some possibilities!

Where can I find out about NY/NJ policies about bikes on the subway? I'd like to do the 5 borough trip next year or maybe something else.

The PATH by miker2 (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 05:53:40 PM EST
allows you to have bikes in the end cars during !rush hours.  I don't know about the subways.  You can also ride over almost every bridge including the Brooklyn and GWB.

mta.info should have something about bikes on the subways, but I couldn't find anything.

Mmmmmm Bike porn by monkeymind (4.00 / 1) #9 Mon Aug 15, 2005 at 06:14:13 PM EST
I feel that I am being slightly unfaithful to my own bike just by looking.

But it is so nice to look...
